HeLa cells are often referred to as being “immortal” because they are capable of dividing infinitely and living for decades at a time without any issues. They are the first line of human cells capable of surviving in vitro, and they do not require any special care when they are being cultivated. Because of this, there are billions of HeLa cells throughout the world at the moment, and they have quickly become the most popular cell line in many labs. It’s amazing to think about what a key part Lacks has played in science due to the cells that were found in her body upon her death. HeLa cells are used in labs during all kinds of tests and experiments. Researchers are able to study the effects that certain diseases have on cells by putting HeLa cells to good use. They are also able to develop different medications and vaccines based on the studies they do on HeLa cells. And amazingly, there is even one company that recently used HeLa cells as part of an art installation to draw awareness to cancer research.
